Clarence Marion Cunningham of Stillwater died peacefully at home surrounded by his family March 23. For more than three decades, he was known to his OSU students at as a tough but fair-minded professor of chemistry. To all the rest who knew him, Clarence was a tireless social activist, community leader, a quick wit, a loving father and a dear friend. Clarence was born July 24, 1920, in Cooper, Texas. Clarence graduated from Texas A&M University in 1942, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. After his service in World War II, Clarence earned a master’s and doctorate degree in physical chemistry from the University of California-Berkley. He met Janet Kohl, a former Army nurse there and they married in 1951. In 1954, he joined the faculty at Oklahoma State University, where he taught chemistry for 31 years.
