Martha Fischer

Martha Gwendolyn Anderson Fischer, 93, passed away on February 3, 2016. She was born May 4, 1922, in Clarinda, IA. She and LeRoy Fischer were married in 1948 in Stanton, IA. He predeceased her in March 2014. Martha graduated from Iowa State University in 1944 in family relations and early childhood development. In 1947, she came to Oklahoma A&M College to teach, after previously teaching at Sturgeon Bay, WI, and at the National Child Research Center in Washington DC. Martha was a very active volunteer in Stillwater, having taught Sunday School for many years, working as a long-time precinct election worker, serving as a member of the Stillwater Public Library Board, working as a museum volunteer, and helping organize the Oklahoma State University Friends of the Library. Martha was named Stillwater Mother of the Year in 1963 and received a Distinguished Home Economics Alumna Award from Iowa State in 1971. She was also an active member of several organizations, including the Stillwater Woman’s Club, PEO, United Methodist Women, Lahoma Club, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Oklahoma Historical Society, and the OSU Emeriti Association. She served as an officer in a number of these organizations. Martha was predeceased by her parents and sisters Ruth and Marilyn, who was her twin. Survivors include a daughter, Barbara McCrary, and two sons, James and his wife Vickie, and John. She is also survived by five grandchildren and one great grandson.
