Charles Bacon

Charles M. Bacon, 84, was born in Shreveport, LA, on December 20, 1933, to Frank and Helen Bacon. He passed away in Stillwater, OK, on August 22, 2018. He grew up in Bartlesville, OK, and graduated from high school there. In 1951, Charles entered Oklahoma A&M to study animal science. Following his graduation in 1955, he married his high school sweetheart, Jeanne Duncan. He served in the U.S. Army in Japan; and after his discharge, he returned to OSU to study electrical engineering, receiving his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in 1961. In 1964, he received his Ph.D. in systems science from Michigan State University. In 1964 and 1965, he taught in MSU’s Electrical Engineering and Systems Science Department. In 1966, Charles returned to OSU as an assistant professor in electrical engineering, attaining the rank of professor in 1972. In 1978, he became the head of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, serving in that capacity until 1984. In 1984, he took a one-year sabbatical at Arizona State University to develop a background in the emerging fields of digital systems and computer engineering. He returned to OSU in 1985 to begin teaching and doing research in these areas. From 1987 to 1988, he served as Interim Associate Dean of the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology. Charles greatly enjoyed teaching and conducting research and serving as advisor for more than 50 MS and Ph.D. students. Charles took another sabbatical in 1985. Upon returning to OSU, his research focused on artificial intelligence and expert systems. He was very proud of his role in obtaining two multimillion dollar grants from the US National Science Foundation and the Oklahoma Center for the Advancement of Science and Technology. Charles retired from OSU in 1994. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Lois and Jenny. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne, one son, Stephen Bacon, one daughter, Jan Bacon-Fleming, and a son-in-law, William Fleming. In addition, he is survived by four granddaughters and five great-grandchildren.
