Jean Shipman

Jean A. Shipman, 97, was born April 23, 1921, in Pittsburgh, PA, to Abram and Agathe Shipman and passed away on July 21. 2018. Following high school graduation, she worked for 13 years for a telephone company. She graduated from Oregon State University in 1956 where she worked as an extension home economics agent in Coos County, OR. In 1962, she returned to Oregon State where she was an assistant professor and consumer marketing specialist. She earned her master’s degree in home economics journalism from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1964. She was employed by Oklahoma Sate University for 21 years as an assistant and associate editor for the Cooperative Extension Service as well as the Public Information Officer for the College of Home Economics. She retired from Oklahoma State in 1985. On May 22, 1999, she and Mark B. Rhea of Arcata, CA, were married in Stillwater. Jean was very active at the national level of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, including service as the first chair-elect of the AAFCS Home Economics Communications Section. She was also a member of several local organizations. Jean was preceded in death by her husband. Her sole survivors are several distant cousins.
