FACULTY COUNCIL RESEARCH COMMITTEE REPORT
17 JANUARY 2014
The faculty Council Research Committee last met on December 11, 2013 and will meet again on Wednesday, January 29, 2014. The Committee’s focus remains improving the opportunities for undergraduates to have a research experience as part of their education. This focus has led to an inquiry into the adequacy of facilities and campus wide support for research.
These interests led to the last Committee meeting being devoted to a meeting of the Committee with the Associate Deans for Research for all of the Colleges. The meeting with the Associate Deans went well, The discussions led to a request the Chairman of the Research Committee, Gilbert John, (Micro-Biology and Molecular Genetics) to arrange a meeting with the President, VP for Research, VP for Finance, Provost, Associate Deans for Research, the Chairwoman of the Faculty Council and the Chairman of the Research Committee. Gilbert John reports the meeting went well and that President Hargis suggested the Group meet quarterly to discuss progress on the issues raised. Currently the Committee is reviewing a statement defining research and as foundation for a strategic plan to improve the status of the University as a research institution.
The Committee’s next meeting, Wednesday, January 29th , will involve discussions with Ramesh Sharda on issues related to the “overload” policy and Ken Bartels on the animal care facility issues.
