Beverly Crabtree

Beverly J. Crabtree, 79, passed away on December 7, 2016, in Springfield, MO. She was born on June 22, 1937, in Lincoln, NE, to Wayne and Frances Deles Dernier. From the University of Missouri—Columbia, she completed her bachelor’s (1959) and master’s (1962) degrees in home economics education. Bev and R. Jewell Crabtree met at the University of Missouri, and they were married on June 1. 1958. Bev completed the doctorate in home economics education at Iowa State University. Bev began her career as a high school home economics teacher; and in 1964, she became a faculty member at Michigan State University. In 1967, Bev became the chair of the Home Economics Education Department and later became the associate dean of Extension for the College of Home Economics. In 1975, she became the dean of the College of Home Economics at Oklahoma State University, a position she held for 12 years. In 1987, Bev accepted the position of dean of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences at Iowa State University, retiring in 1997. During her career, Bev belonged to a number of professional, honorary, and local civic organizations, serving in a variety of leadership positions. Bev was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Jewell, son Gregg (Ursula), daughter Karen (Allen Kunkel), five grandchildren, brother LeRoy Dernier (Ruth), sister Marilyn (Paul Hunter), as well as several nieces and nephews.
