Ned Raun

Ned S. Raun, 92, was born on February 10, 1925, to Chris and Sarah Raun in Upland, NE. He passed away on August 10, 2017, in Tulsa, OK. Following high school graduation, he served in the U.S. Air Force as a navigator, 2nd Lieutenant, until the end of WWII. He and Esther “Essie” Burris Zangger were married on August 18, 1946. In 1948, Ned received a bachelor’s degree in agriculture from the University of Nebraska, after which he farmed for 11 years on the Raun homestead in Upland, NE. In 1958, he began the Ph.D. in ruminant nutrition at Iowa State University, graduating in 1961. For a number of years, he worked for the Rockefeller Foundation, International Center for Tropical Agriculture, USAID, Winrock International, and MIAC, receiving numerous awards and recognition. He later became employed as a graduate lecturer at Oklahoma State University. Ned was predeceased by his parents, his son Larry, and his son-in-law Jim Hromas. He is survived by his wife Essie, five children and their spouses, including Kathi (Jim) Blazer, Barbara (Paul) Kroening, Richard (Kay) Raun, Edward (Gisela) Raun, and William (Tanya) Raun, and daughter-in-law Karen Raun. He is also survived by siblings Joan Kopf, Robert (Eileen) Raun, and Arthur (Ruth) Raun, as well as by 14 grandchildren and 12 grandchildren.
