Mary Holmes

Mary Winton Holmes, 85, was born to David and Eugenia Whitaker Winton on March 26, 1933, in Lakewood, NJ. She passed away on September 26, 2018, in Wichita, KS. Mary’s family moved to Norman, OK, where she attended high school and the University of Oklahoma, ultimately earning a master’s degree in music education. Mary and Don Holmes were married in Norman on August 28, 1956. Soon after they were married, Don was drafted into the U.S. Army. During Don’s time in the military, they lived in San Antonio and San Francisco where their son Philip was born. After Don’s discharge from the U.S. Army, they moved back to Oklahoma, living in Stillwater and Oklahoma City, where their daughter Carolyn was born. In 1968, they moved to Edmond and later to Washington, DC. Eventually, they moved back to Stillwater to retire. Mary was an active volunteer in numerous civic and charitable organizations, in addition to offering private piano and violin lessons. In 2013, Mary and Don moved to Wichita. Mary was preceded in death by her parents and older sister, Nancy Carter. She is survived by son Philip (Noelle) and daughter Carolyn Layden (Christopher), niece Darla Carter, and five grandchildren, Dylan and Cameron Holmes and Hannah, Joshua and Zachary Layden.
