John Jobe

John M. Jobe passed away on January 20, 2019. He grew up in Ponca City, OK, and graduated from Ponca City High School in 1951. Among his early honors were being selected as an All-State basketball player and a Boys State delegate. In 1955, John received his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Tulsa where he received a four-year basketball scholarship. John and Caryl Albin were married in August, 1954, and were the parents of six children. Following his graduation from TU, John taught mathematics at Ponca City High School where he also coached baseball and basketball. John began graduate school at Oklahoma State University in 1962, and he received the Ph.D. in mathematics in 1966. He began teaching at OSU following receipt of the Ph.D. and attained the rank of full professor in 1979. In 1977, John directed and hosted a 45-minute film/video about Henry P. Iba. John was a member of the OSU Athletic Council, he served on the OSU Faculty Council, and he was an active participant in the OSU mathematics graduate program. John was a pioneer in using video tapes in the teaching of mathematics. In 1994, he retired from OSU. During his retirement, he wrote over 1,000 brief stories in rhyme and published 11 books that contained many of his poems. John was coach of numerous little league baseball and basketball teams and volunteered at Our Daily Bread. In addition, he was a member of the Stillwater Antique Classic Car Club; and he enjoyed spending time with family and friends in the Colorado mountains. He is survived by his wife, Caryl, children Marcus, Jody (Carol Merlo), Amy Nelson, Jenny Farrar (Troy) and Hutch Jobe (Trish) as well as by 19 grandchildren and great grandchildren.
